The postseason delivered instant drama Thursday night as Clinton-Massie Varsity Falcon battled through a tense pitcher’s duel to earn a 1-0 walk-off victory over New Richmond Varsity Lions in OHSAA Tournament Round 1. After eight scoreless innings and momentum swinging back and forth throughout the night, the Falcons finally broke through in the bottom of the ninth inning. With the game still deadlocked at 0-0, Colton Fite delivered the biggest hit of the night, lining a walk-off single to score the game’s only run and send Clinton-Massie into celebration mode. The victory capped off an outstanding performance on the mound by the Falcons’ pitching staff. Andrew Smith was dominant from the start, keeping New Richmond off the scoreboard for more than eight innings. Smith scattered eight hits across 8.1 innings of work while striking out six and issuing just one walk. Will Creech came on in relief and shut the door to earn the win. The right-hander threw two-thirds of an inning, allowing no hits or runs while striking out one. New Richmond’s Alex Uhlenbrock was equally impressive in the classic postseason showdown. Uhlenbrock tossed eight scoreless innings, allowing six hits while striking out 11 Falcons hitters and walking two before the Lions were finally unable to escape the ninth inning. Colton Fite finished with the game-winning RBI, going 1-for-5 at the plate. Brett Gray provided a spark offensively for Clinton-Massie, leading the Falcons with two hits from the number eight spot in the lineup. New Richmond was led offensively by Wesley Yaczik and Uhlenbrock, who each collected two hits. The Lions also turned a double play defensively in the hard-fought contest. In a game where every pitch mattered, Clinton-Massie found a way to survive and advance, punching its ticket into the next round of the OHSAA Tournament in dramatic fashion.
